Love
February to most of us signifies love. Love is something that most of us say we want to have in our lives, but do we really know what love is or what we are asking for? Love according to Webster is an intense feeling of deep affection or a feeling of deep romantic or sexual attachment to someone. Please understand love, true love is more than a feeling. Webster’s definition of love sounds a lot like Webster’s definition of “lust” which is a very strong sexual desire. True honest long-lasting love is defined in 1 Corinthians 13. Verse 4 from the chapter tells us that “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. Just that verse alone tells that love is hard work.
What is patient and what is kind? These two words have nothing
to do with feelings or sexual desires. Patient is the ability to accept or
tolerate delays, problems, or suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious.
Can you do that? Do you think that love has no problem or anxiety? Something to
consider in your definition of love. Love is kind, what does that mean?
Kindness by definition is the quality of being friendly, generous, and
considerate. Can you be kind while being patient? Can you be generous while
going through problems with the one who says they love you? Can you be
considerate of the one you say you love when going through suffering while not
becoming anxious?
“It (love) does not envy, it does not boast, it is not
proud.” What does this mean? It means that love is not resentful or jealous of
the one that we say we love. This means that we do not take excessive pride or
have self-satisfaction over the one we say we love. This also means that love
does not take deep pleasure in individual achievements over the achievements of
the love relationship. In a loving
relationship the “I” has to become the “we”. This is love. Hard work but worth
the work. When you understand the true definition of love then you know how beautiful
love truly is. Read the chapter it is well worth it.
