For married men: Love your wives. Protect your families. YOU ARE the head. YOU ARE the leader. YOU ARE to be submitted to. Build with them. Grow with them. Teach them the principles that will give them everlasting life.

For single men: Hold fast to the promise that your inheritance is on the way. “She” is on Her way. She’s still being shaped and molded and tried true, for YOU. Singleness is not an unfortunate state, it is an opportunity to be selfish and internally clean house.

Finding Consistency

Talk to your husband or wife about making a “need to improve” list for your marriage. We all have busy lives and our marriages can be put on the back burner if we are not careful. Talk about the things you both would like to see become more consistent in your marriage. Be grace filled in your sharing, understanding that your spouse may know these things need to change, but does not want to feel like they are being chastised. The last you thing you want the list to become is simply you pointing out where you think your spouse has failed. To keep this from happening, talk about how you would like to serve your spouse better to help them develop in the areas they need to grow. Then share the things you would like to be more consistent. Pray with your spouse over the list and talk about practical ways to make these changes.

Finding consistency through God’s plan for your life and marriage will bring you a closeness and intimacy you have been searching for. With God and your spouse. Consistently serving your spouse and loving them the way God has designed in Ephesians 5, is not always easy, but God will bless you in your consistency and obedience to His word for marriage.

LeBron James had more on his mind than just ringing in the new year on Saturday night.

At a New Year's Evedinner and party at the Shelborne hotel in South Beach, theMiami Heat star, 27, proposed to his longtime girlfriend Savannah Brinson. And he got their kids in on the action as well.

Right after popping the question, James picked up the couple's sons LeBron Jr., 7, and Bryce, 4, and swung them around on the floor. "It was so sweet to watch," a rep for Remy Martin V, who hosted the dinner, tells PEOPLE. "Everyone is extremely happy."

The party, hosted by Heat teammate Dwyane Wade and his girlfriend Gabrielle Union, was also a belated birthday celebration for James, who turned 27 the day before.

Heat star Chris Bosh and Queen Latifah were also on the guest list of 60 friends and family members.

"When it happens, it happens," Brinson, 25, told Harper's Bazaar of marriage in 2010. "If we do it, I want it to be forever."

The Noble Peace Prize was just awarded to (3) Three Wonderful & Outstanding women of our day. I would like to add you because of the fight you fought to the List as the Fourth. You have shown us over the past 35+ years living with LUPUS, http://www.lupus.org/, how you can maintain both strength & faith to not just live one day at a time, but to make every hour your very best. You taught me through how you handled adversity to not allow others to turn their wrong doings towards you into hatred towards them. I learned from you that hatred will stop you from growing, loving, caring & living etc...(which does not mean that it's not going to hurt like H*ll) but, it will show that you can and will survive. You've shown that Forgiveness is the best cure for living a full/healthy life, even when you felt that the reality that you were dealt was a Bad Hand. You shared with me that God teaches us this in 2 Thess 1:5-7 NIV 5 "All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. 6 God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you 7 and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well". These are scriptures I've study for understanding...as to why they meant so much to you! On October 8th, 2011, you told the LORD that you were ready to come home on YOUR 59th Birthday.

He's Not Heavy, He's My Brother!

There is a painting by an African-American artist I saw when I was younger, depicting a man reaching over a wall to help another man over to freedom. The caption under it read, “He’s not heavy, he’s my brother.” This painting was inspired by a song written by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell in 1969. The first verse in the song said:
The road is long with many a winding turn that leads us to who knows were, who knows when but I’m strong enough to carry him. He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.
Now, I have this same painting in my home...
In these uncertain times there are a lot of brothers and sisters down who not only need a hand out but more importantly need a hand up. Especially from those of us who are in a position to help someone out. We should help lift them up because in helping them we really help ourselves.
The Elements of Encouragement...
Dear God,
Show me how to lift up my brothers and sisters who are not heavy. Give me discernment on who to lift and whose pulling me down. Give me the resources to help those who are not heavy. Thank you that one day when I was stuck in despair, that your love lifted me. When nothing else could help Jesus your love lifted me. Thank you for lifting me out of my mess.

This is a video continuation of the Bilal and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Bomb Shelter saga entitled, "Tainted Love."

Known by many as Synthpop duo Soft Cell's big hit in 1981, "Tainted Love" was originally composed by Ed Cobb, formerly of The Four Preps and originally recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964 as the B-side to "My Bad Boy's Coming Home". The original version was by no means a commercial success. In fact, it was a flop. However, in 1973, while British club DJ Richard Searling was on a trip to the U.S., he purchased a copy and found the Motown-influenced sound was a perfect match for the music movement with was growing in the UK club scene referred to as "Northern Soul. Searling took the song and popularized it.

With new found popularity, Gloria Jones tried again, re-recording "Tainted Love" in 1976. But this again failed to chart.

Several years later, Soft Cell, the vocal-synth pop duo that took the popular track and released a slower, synth and rhythm heavy version in 1981. It reached #1 on 18 different charts.

So now, we're back to the beginning. Bilal, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Daedelus, and more, in the studio jamming away to Gloria Jones' original version of that great 1964 song.

It's just pure energy. The musicians, the movements, the sounds..

Dr. Boyce Watkins, along with other leading black male scholars have all agreed to take part in “Hoodwinked,” a documentary about the state of the black male in America.

According to the filmmaker, James “Janks” Morton, describes the film in the following way:

Hoodwinked will be an exploration of the most recent data being released by the US Census,DOJ, DOE, DOC and the CDC to highlight strides and achievements in the African American community. It will feature expert contributors, man on the street interviews, anchor desk headline reporting, and the return of Janks Morton and his “Board of Education” to examine further the symbiotic relationship between media, government and special interest, as they exploit imagery, statistics and data that too often presents a skewed perspective of the modern era African American experience.

The film is designed to challenge many of the prevailing myths about black male underachievement and incarceration. Here are some of the statistics that Morton presents as an alternative to prevailing perceptions:

Michael Jordan’s high school love letter revealed

Michael Jordan's tough-guy reputation will no doubt survive this revelation, but it's no less surprising and not the least bit less charming that a recently revealed high school love note Michael penned in 1980 shows him to be just as smitten as we all were, when gathering our thoughts as we prepared a note meant for the object of our teenaged affection.

Yes, Michael Jordan wrote notes. Letters, to be more specific, including an alternately sheepish and smooth bit of romantic correspondence that he apparently wrote as a student at Emsley A. Laney High School in Wilmington, N.C., in the early 1980s, well before he embarked on his Hall of Fame NBA career with the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards.

In the letter, which sold at auction for $5,100.66 in December 2004 and was posted Thursday by the folks at the great site Letters of Note, Jordan apologizes to his "dearest Laquette" for making her "look pretty rotten," then goes on to extol her beauty, explicitly point out when he had made a joke, offer her "his best love" and sign the whole shebang with his full name, including his middle initial. (If you want to compare and contrast the handwriting, here's a page from MJ's high school yearbook; the signature looks like a match to me.)

Student: Yes, sir.
Professor: So, you believe in God?
Student: Absolutely, sir.
Professor: Is God good?
Student: Sure.
Professor: My brother died of cancer, even though he prayed to God to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn’t. How is God good, then? Hmm?
(Student was silent)
Professor: You can’t answer, can you? Let’s start again, young fella. Is God good?
Student: Yes.
Professor: Is Satan good?
Student: No.
Professor: Where does Satan come from?
Student: From.. God.
Professor: That’s right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?
Student: Yes.
Professor: Evil is everywhere, isn’t it? And God did make everything. Correct?
Student: Yes.
Professor: So who created evil?
(Student didn’t answer)
Professor: Is there sickness? Immortality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don’t they?
Student: Yes, sir.
Professor: So, who created them?

Professor: Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell me, son.. have you ever seen God?
Student: No, sir.
Professor: Tell us if you have ever heard your God.

Professor: Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, smelt your God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God, for that matter?
Student: No, sir. I’m afraid I haven’t.
Professor: Yet you still believe in Him?

Professor: According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, Science says your God doesn’t exist. What do you say to that, son?
Student: Nothing. I only have my Faith.
Professor: Yes, Faith. And that is the problem Science has.
Student: Professor, is there such a thing as Heat?
Professor: Yes.
Student: And is there such a thing as Cold?
Professor: Yes.
Student: No, sir, there isn’t.
(The Lecture Theatre became very quiet with this turn of events)
Student: Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don’t have anything called cold. We can hit 458 Degrees below Zero which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of Heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.
(There was a pon-drop silence in the Lecture Theatre)
Student: What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?
Professor: Yes. What is night if there isn’t darkness?
Student: You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have Low Light, Normal Light, Bright Light, Flashing Light… But if you have No Light constantly, you have nothing and it’s called Darkness, isn’t it? In reality, darkness isn’t. If it is, You would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn’t you?
Professor: So what is the point you are making, young man?
Student: Sir, my point is, your Philosophical Premise is flawed.
Professor: Flawed? Can you explain how?
Student: Sir, you are working on the Premise of Duality. You argue there is Life and then there is Death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, Science can’t even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life, just the absence of it. Now tell me, Professor, do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?
Professor: If you are referring to the Natural Evolutionary Process, yes of course, I do.
Student: Have you ever observed Evolution with your own eyes, sir?
(The professor shook his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument was going)
Student: Since no one has ever observed the Process of Evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a Scientist but a Preacher?
(The class was in uproar)
Student: Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor’s brain?
(The class broke out into laughter)
Student: Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor’s brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? .. No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established Rules of Empirical, Stable and Demonstrable Protocol, Science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures?
(The room was silent. The Professor stared at the student, his face unfathomable)
Professor: I guess you’ll have to take them on Faith, son.
Student: That is it, sir.. exactly! The link between man and God is Faith. That is all that keeps things alive and moving!

Home Court Disadvantage

The Memphis Grizzlies played an amazing game against the Spurs at home in the Fed Ex Forum that has been affectionately renamed the “house of grind.” The place was electric with fan frenzy. There is something special about playing at home that gives you that extra boost of confidence through support of the people. In many stadiums and arenas, the crowd is known as the sixth man because of how the fans add power to the team. Having a home court is supposed to be an advantage.

The only place ‘home court’ is a disadvantage is in the arena of the anointed. Many times people who are anointed in the area of ministry are honored more away from home than they are by their own. The closer people are to you the more common you become. It’s hard for people to see you because they see you every day. This can happen in ministry and in marriage. You can take a team like the Seattle Supersonics with a mediocre response from their fans and relocate them to a town hungry for a team like Oklahoma and get totally different results. Home court should be an advantage but sometimes there is no honor amongst our own.

After being successful everywhere else in healing the sick, raising the dead, giving sight to the blind, Jesus comes to his hometown and preaches in their synagogues. They were amazed but not convicted. They were impressed but not converted. They wanted to know where did he get all this wisdom and how is he performing all these miracles because we know who his mother and father are. We know where he lives. We grew up with him and they went from being amazed to offended!

When you have been called and anointed don’t be surprised if you are not honored at home. You’d think there would be a home court advantage but sometimes it’s a disadvantage because:

1. Familiarity breeds contempt. When people are around you a long time the novelty wears off and they begin to see the natural more than they are able to see the super on your natural. In relationships, it’s called taking the other for granted. Have you ever noticed that your spouse looks better when you take them out around other people? It’s not that they look any better but it’s because other people take notice of what you have become used to.

2. They are offended by the prophetic because they can’t get past the man. Some people appear more anointed because you don’t know them. If you knew them you probably wouldn’t be able to handle their humanity. Some of the most anointed are the most eccentric. That’s why Jesus had to pray before he selected his disciples. Even Judas was offended by how Jesus handled the expression of appreciation from the woman who anointed him. He wanted that money to be used for the poor (himself) but the woman wanted to honor Jesus.

3. Family are too familiar to receive because they see you as equal not anointed. Even Jesus had to shift his family dynamics by saying, “those that do the will of my father are my family.”

4. You can’t do many miracles around people whose faith is tainted with familiarity. This is why you have to move away sometimes to do the same things that you could have done at home. Could this be why Lebron James took less money to leave Cleveland and go to Miami?

How do you strengthen your Home court advantage and honor your prophet?

1. Don’t make your pastor/leader/spouse so familiar that you stop seeing God in them. Step back every now and then to appreciate the person that God has put in your life to lead you. Pray for them and honor them through obedience to their leadership.

2. Give Honor where honor is due. 1 Timothy 5:17
The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.

3. Honor the position while relating to the person.

4. Give your prophet/pastor home court advantage. The more you cheer/support/believe the better they do. The Memphis Grizzlies theme is, “we believe.” Now that the fans believe, the players are playing like they believe. We need a home court advantage at church and at home to keep on winning.

Dear God,
Strengthen our home court so that we can give our very best to you. Thank you for grounding moments when we realize that its not about us but its about you. I’m not here to take your Glory but to give you more. Thank you for the moments when home court pushes me beyond what I thought I could accomplish. Thank you God for being in my court and pushing me past my humanity into the place of ENCOURAGEMENT.

Servicing Justice

Instead of saying that Justice has been served we should have illuminated in the windows of our conscience the words, "Serving Justice." the Psalmist reminds us that, "Blessed are they who maintain Justice, who constantly do what is right." it is not a one time act. It is not getting revenge on your enemies. Justice as defined by Cornell West, is what love looks like in Public. To be human you must bear witness to Justice everyday.

Psalm 106:3 Blessed are they who maintain justice, who constantly do what is right.

How do we maintain justice daily?

1. Treat others like you would want to be treated.

2. Seek the good of others not just yourself. to look out for self interest only is selfish.

3. When it is in your power to do good and help those in need do not withhold it.

4. Do not accept a bribe (money) to release the wicked. In other words Justice is not for sale. We can't make deals with corrupt leaders just to get their oil then later turn on them when they no longer serve our interests.

5. Be consistent with Justice in every area of life.

Dear God,
Help us to Love our neighbors and our enemies. Love conquers all. Lover covers a multitude of sins. Loving others in full view of everybody is Justice. Let Justice roll down like water and Righteousness like a mighty stream. Fill me with living water so that I can maintain justice every day of my life... Amen!

When it’s YOU…

Often times, When I’m blogging and sharing different encouraging words & concepts that hopefully is helping others deal with everyday challenges, I am brought back to topics like: We are unbreakable because…

or You Can’t Afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought

and “I’m not letting go until you bless me…”

I sometime wonder where did that topic or title come from and why am I writing about this subject matter. Who knew that these topics may have been personal.

Here’s an example of how of what I mean. Last week I finally got an answer about a position that I applied for at a major University. The position seemed ideal for me, it was in the area that I lived and I met all the requirements, but here’s how it played out. The positions came out to being between myself and another applicant. It’s either them or me…first a phone interview (a panel of five members), next a face to face interview, then the background check, references to be reviewed…neck and neck, right! An eight weeks process. Then finally getting that wonderful letter in the mail stating, and I quote straight from the letter:

” We have decided to offer this position to another individual. In no way should this be interpreted as a reflection of your skills and accomplishments, but a judgment based on all the facts and information at our disposal”.

Wow, Thanks for your time but we like the other person more than YOU… Ok, I know what you are saying the thing that we are taught to say, that old common statement “it’s there lost”…, “there’s something better for me”…” I didn’t want it anyway”. But after a couple of seconds reality sets in our true feelings starts to well up and our words change to,”why didn’t they need, want, or like me”? ” It’s Cool, I’m OK”! You are left to your own thoughts, feeling like in the words of Glee singers “Looser like me”.

Now, I remember my blogs and statements and quotes…disappointments makes you stronger, It’s not just words, it’s real, a package sitting on your door step of reality.

Stay Positive…Stay Encouraged…God HONORS your Heart! It’s not always Easy, but we know it’s Necessary. In Prov. 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Psalm 27:13-14 (NKJV) ¹³I would have lost heart, unless I had believed That I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living. ¹⁴ Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!

Psalm 73:25-26 (NKJV) ²⁵ Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You. ²⁶ My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Dear God show me what you are doing beyond what I see right now. Change my perspective so I can see where I’m going. Thank you for helping me achieve greatness through the struggle of what I’m going through.

V – Value (understanding that you are valuable and realizing your value). First and foremost, you are a child of God created in His image; therefore you were created to become successful. Realize this truth and you automatically catapult your value.

A – Appreciation for life. Be thankful for everyday you wake up because that is a brand new day of opportunity. Because our days are not guaranteed, you should live each day to the fullest.

L – Love yourself and love others. It is truly amazing what degree of positive impact you have on yourself and others when you decide to walk in love. God said the greatest gift is the gift of love. We may not always have the answers to ours and others problems, however, when we choose to handle adversity in the spirit of love the answers will reveal themselves to you.

U – Uniqueness. If you want to increase your value just be yourself. There is no one on this earth that can be a better you than you. You were born to do things in this lifetime that purpose has reserved specifically for you. Being the best you that you can be is invaluable.

E – Education. To increase your value, you must continually strive to educate yourself. You must learn how to grow in whatever field of endeavor you choose to achieve in. Make it your objective to grow personally, professionally, physically and spiritually. Even if you cannot afford to attend an institute of higher learning you can always check out books on the topics of your desire at your local public library. Guess what? The cost at the library is absolutely free! In other words, there are no excuses for lack of self-education.

Realizing your purpose in life is realizing your value. Realizing you have a calling and that you have been blessed with special talents and gifts to offer represents your value and service to this world. You were born to make an absolute difference in this world. Realize this and you realize your value!

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed. At times it can feel like the walls are closing in on us but what God has inside us can’t be crushed. Our inner fortitude will not succumb to outward pressure.

2 Corinthians 4:8-9
We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.

Persecuted, but not abandoned. God does not leave us in our persecution. Rather it is a sign that God is on our side. Jesus said in John 15:20 “if they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.”

Struck down but not destroyed. In other words, I’m down but not out. We never fail because we never give up. God gives us the ability to rise gain. Because Jesus got up from the grave we can get up out of whatever knocked us down.

Dear God,
Thank you for making me unbreakable. I’ve been through so much in my journey toward wholeness but you’ve been keeping me through it all. The more I go through on the outside the stronger I get on the inside. Restore those who are going through outward oppression and devastation. Bless the people of Haiti, Japan, Africa, Libya and Arabia. I pray you would lift the heavy yoke of injustice, pestilence, and violence off of all your children worldwide and help me to be an instrument of grace in assisting them. Help us to be unbreakable.

A good marriage requires efforts from both parties to stay true to each other, and keeping their promise to love and support each other unconditionally through the good and bad times.

The Legacy of the Fab Five

Jalen Rose, a retired NBA star, was a member of Michigan’s famed “Fab Five,” a quintet of freshman basketball players (including Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson) that led the school to appearances in the NCAA tournament final in 1992 and 1993. Rose served as an executive producer on the recent ESPN documentary “The Fab Five.” In the documentary, Rose said he believed at the time that Duke only recruited black players that he considered “Uncle Toms.” Grant Hill, who starred on the Duke team that beat Michigan in the 1992 final, responded to Rose last week in the New York Times. “I caution my fabulous five friends to avoid stereotyping me and others they do not know in much the same way so many people stereotyped them back then for their appearance and swagger,” he wrote.

I want to thank the many people who helped to make last Sunday’s “Fab Five” documentary the highest-rated documentary in ESPN history. The response was tremendous and demonstrates the legacy of the Fab Five will be long remembered and we have secured our place in the history of college basketball. The purpose of the documentary was to tell the story from our perspective.

Although we came up short of our ultimate goal of winning the championship, we showed we were full of substance and not just hype. Creating the documentary, I wanted to show we did something that has never been done and possibly no other team will accomplish — start five freshman and reach the NCAA championship. We were a band of brothers and the documentary reflected our bond on and off the court. To this day, I am proud to say my Fab Five teammates are my brothers.

Addressing the elephant in the room, comments from the documentary regarding Duke University were completely taken out of context. I respect the success of Duke’s program and stated this was my opinion as a teenager growing up in the inner city of Detroit. I also acknowledged that Grant Hill had something I wanted growing up – a successful family. It’s a bit disappointing some people insinuated I think black people from successful families are Uncle Toms. What made the documentary must-see TV is the fact we showed brutal honesty and addressed every topic head on and without reservation.

At the end of the day, some people will have their own opinions about the Fab Five and who we are as people. I am proud of what we achieved together from 1991-1993 and even more proud of the men we have become and how we all work in the community. For example, this past Friday, I had a groundbreaking ceremony with Dave Bing, the mayor of Detroit, for the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy, my college prep charter school for inner city youth. I am proud to be one of the few athletes to open my own school. Legacies are defined by how people remember you when you are long gone. The Fab Five and the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy are two things I will now leave behind as my legacy.
